How Beef Jerky Can Be A Suitable Food For Astronauts
There is a lot happening with astronaut food right now. NASA has gone ahead and invested about $400K for developing the best food that can be taken into outer space and eaten by their astronauts. Among these foods, beef jerky rates highly.
Beef jerky is currently being thought to be one of the best human foods in space right now. Its preparation is a reason for that. This food isn’t cooked in the usual way. It is prepared by drying it out highly, almost removing all the moisture that is present in it. Due to that reason, beef jerky becomes a virtually non degradable food.
Due to this drying action, beef jerky also becomes completely crunchy and wafer-like. With very little weight, this item can be easily taken in carry bags or backpacks. When hunger strikes, just one slice of it would be more than enough.
Beef jerky is also a readily mixable food with other food substances. It can be easily added to soups and can be cooked in various ways to make it a more conventional food. But most people like to chew on beef jerky as it is because of its great taste.
One of the most prime advantages of road kill beef jerky is its high nutrition value. This food has an amazing amount of protein in it and has very little fat despite being derived from red meat. Hence, astronauts who consume beef jerky are directly taking in a healthy amount of protein and keeping themselves away from fat which could be quite lethal to them up there in space since they cannot physically exert themselves much there.
When you are in a spacecraft, high above the earth, there is very little you have to do. Time becomes difficult to pass, and once again beef jerky comes to the rescue. Most astronauts feel that chewing on beef jerky is an experience in itself. This food is so crispy and dried hard that it takes a while to be able to chew it. Pieces of it can be broken and kept in the mouth, savoring its rich taste till it becomes soft enough to chew and ingest. Evidently, there are a lot of occasions to have quality beef jerky time when you are in a spacecraft!
The longevity of beef jerky is another important factor. Astronauts may be hovering in space for a few weeks or months before they can get earth foods again. At such times, beef jerky is completely dependable because it virtually doesn’t decompose at all. It provides ready nourishment whenever it is consumed.
It is because of all these things that beef jerky has become a favorite astronaut food right now. Clearly, this is a big one up for this lovely food.
